Membership Notes
The KRPS MVP Series ends a few hits short
The spring membership campaign
or the KRPS MVP Series, as it was called,
ended at 6:20pm on Friday, April 11. There
were several very strong days throughout
the campaign, which began on Thursday,
April 3. But, it wasn’t quite enough to
carry KRPS to the goal. The final tally left
KRPS $6,524 short.
There were many positives that came
out of the MVP Series. A total of 340 KRPS
listeners made pledges during the nine
day on-air drive, with 62 making their first
ever pledge. The amount contributed by
the KRPS Philanthropist Society was the
second largest ever! And, the total raised
on four individual days exceeded $5,000!
A big thank you goes out to all who
contributed to the successes of the MVP
Series in any way!
As you probably know, your KRPS
membership is good for one year
from the time you contribute to KRPS.
Unfortunately, membership renewals
were the low point for the MVP Series. At
the time the MVP Series concluded there
were still 339 KRPS memberships due for
renewal with an expiration date of May
1, 2008. Since members are the single
most reliable source of funding for KRPS,
renewed memberships are just as, if not
more so, important as new memberships.
If you’re not sure of the expiration date
for your KRPS membership you can find
it on the back cover of this program
guide. It’s located directly above your
mailing information. If your membership
expiration date is May 1, 2008, we invite
you to take a moment now to renew your
membership for another year. You may
either cut out the form on page 3 and send
it to KRPS at PO Box 899, Pittsburg, KS
66762 or you can make your pledge online
at www.KRPS.org.
As this column is being written the
KRPS membership count is 1,357. While
it’s great to have so many individuals
and families throughout the Four States
support KRPS, it’s also worth noting that
KRPS has had as many as 2,000 members.
KRPS is celebrating its 20th year
on-the-air this year. The way KRPS has
been able to thrive since 1988 is with the
strong support of our members. As we
embark on the next 20 years, we know
it’s as important as ever to have a strong
member base. As we’ve expressed many
times before, without listeners there is no
reason for KRPS. But, without members,
there is no way for KRPS to be what it
is today! Thank you for your continued
support of KRPS!
Programming notes
The first two Saturdays in May bring
a little something different to the KRPS
airwaves.
Tune in Saturday, May 3 at 9pm for The
Clash: Revolution Rock, a one-hour special
that pays tribute to “the only band that
matters.”
The Clash started as a punk band
amidst the social and racial unrest in mid-
70s London. The angst of London’s Burning
progressed to more universal messages, as
global ideas and rhythms mixed with their
punk roots. As they grew in popularity,
they found themselves reflecting the
world.
This special details the legacy of The
Clash and takes a look at how they became
one of the most influential rock bands of
the late 70s and early 80s. Both recent and
vintage band interview clips are featured
in this special and include Clash members
Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon,
and Topper Headon. Tom Morello (Rage
Against the Machine), film director Julien
Temple, and others are also interviewed.
The group’s classic anthems, fan favorites,
and previously unreleased live tracks will
be heard, as well.
On Saturday, May 10, join KRPS at
9pm for the one-hour special, Love is
the Message: The Story of Philadelphia
International Records. This tribute to
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees
Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff finds the
two artists discussing the history of
their collaboration, the stories behind
their biggest hits, and their successful
community development projects
throughout Philadelphia. Legendary
Philadelphia International Records artists
Teddy Pendergrass, The O’Jays, Lou Rawls,
Patti LaBelle, and Billy Paul also chime in
about their work with Gamble and Huff.
Highlights of the program include
Gamble and Huff discussing the impact
their music has had over the past 40 years
of American Pop and R&B music. The duo
also share behind-the-scenes stories of
their own favorite tracks.
