Pittsburg State Police Seeking to Connect with Greater Campus Community

In many ways, a college campus is like a city within a city with unique challenges. On any given day, Pittsburg State, which has an enrollment of about 5,000 also has 100’s of employees, staff, and faculty on campus. In addition, the campus population swells with 1000’s of visitors during football games and major events at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

Keeping a college or university campus secure is challenging with 1,000 students, staff, faculty, and guests visiting daily requiring specialized training.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Every fall and spring at colleges and universities throughout the US students return to classes and unfortunately, with the increase in population, there is a rise in crime and violence.

With that in mind, Pittsburg State University police recently added a new position of Assistant Director of Police and Public Safety.

Steve Rosebrough took on the role and also serves the PSU community as the university's new Emergency Management Coordinator to proactively plan for emergencies and provide training to students, faculty, and staff.

Director of University Police at Pittsburg State Stu Hite says despite an enrollment of around 5,000 students PSU had under 40 Uniform Crime Reports on campus.

“We’re lucky Fred, we only had, I say that, only, I think it was 38 what they call uniform crime reports, UCR reports last year, that gets reported to the KBI and FBI. And 36 of those 38 were property crimes.”

In recognition of National Campus Safety Awareness Month are raising awareness about the safety concerns, preventative measures, and services available to support a safe return to campus this fall.
