One Joplin to hold Poverty Simulation next week

Next week, One Joplin, a community collaborative focused on facilitating communication and collaboration among area organizations, will hold a special event. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Eighty community members from 50 organizations will experience a simulated month of living in poverty next Thursday starting at 9 am at the Joplin Family Worship Center. Scenarios are based on the experiences of community individuals and families.

The event is designed to give participants insight into the challenges low-income families face daily and help identify areas of change that could impact poverty's impact on the Joplin region. Participants will also learn about social capital and opportunities to make a long-term difference in the community.

In a press release, Nicole Brown, Executive Director of One Joplin, said. "Participation in a poverty simulation is life-changing for many. This is an opportunity to walk in their shoes, make decisions, and experience the barriers they face on a daily basis." unquote. The event is free to attend, and lunch will be provided Unquote.
