While driving down an East Texas country road I spotted this scene. The autumn trees and the late afternoon sun made these golden bales of hay shine just a little bit more. Fortunately I had my camera with me. (c) James Q. Eddy Jr.

World Migratory Bird Day Walk

Join us for World Migratory Bird Day at the Cardinal Valley Habitat Restoration Area in Webb City, Missouri, on May 9, 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. We will walk the new Joplin Trail Coalition trail through this former mining landscape that is gradually returning to functioning wildlife habitat. Spring migration is underway, and birds moving through the area make each visit a little different. Friends of Cardinal Valley will be along the route to share observations and help point out bird activity as we walk. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. Migration often brings surprises, even among familiar species. This is a natural site with uneven terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear. Park at the trailhead: Recycling and Limb Drop Off entrance, 2100 N. Madison St., Webb City, MO.
