In Kansas News

One of the most powerful lobbying groups in Kansas is under new leadership.
The Kansas Chamber of Commerce announced that Alan Cobb is resigning after eight years as president of the organization.
The Chamber’s political action committee has been key in electing Republicans to the Legislature and helping expand the GOP’s supermajority in the Statehouse.
The Chamber announced this week that Coleen (caw-LEEN) Jennison will serve as interim president and CEO. She says the group’s mission will not change.
“The government affairs team has done a great job. They’ve been very successful in electing legislators that support pro-business legislation. And we’re going to keep that momentum going.”
Jennison most recently served as vice president for Cox Communications in Kansas.
She lives in Wichita and is married to Robin Jennison, a former speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives.

Federal officers detained up to 12 workers at two Mexican restaurants in the Kansas City area today Celisa Calacal has more on what advocates are calling coordinated immigration raids.
"Immigration advocates say agents with Homeland Security Investigations conducted raids mid-day at El Toro Loco Mexican Bar and Grill locations in Kansas City, Kansas, and Lenexa. Kansas City group Advocates for Immigration Rights and Reconciliation said in a statement that seven workers were detained in K-C-K, and up to five workers were taken into custody in Lenexa. The group says agents placed “closed” signs on the front doors before the raid… which they say created “an atmosphere of intimidation” for workers. Officials say the death of a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed while responding to a 9-1-1 call is part of a rise in domestic violence cases. Peggy Lowe reports:
.Deputy Elijah Ming was called Saturday to a home where a woman said she was threatened by her boyfriend as she tried to move out. 38-year-old Shawn Harris is now charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of Ming. Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree says victims should be wary if a partner.
“…is controlling, is combative, doesn’t allow you to go places, removes you from the ones that love you, take the signs serious and get out.”
So far this year in Kansas City, there have been 16 homicides attributed to domestic violence, compared to 12 last year. I’m Peggy Lowe.
