While driving down an East Texas country road I spotted this scene. The autumn trees and the late afternoon sun made these golden bales of hay shine just a little bit more. Fortunately I had my camera with me. (c) James Q. Eddy Jr.

  • Episode seven of Cutting Deep is a nostalgic one for Raegan. We’re going back to the late 90s and early 2000s. It's another country episode, with songs from albums like The Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces,” Kenny Chesney’s “When The Sun Goes Down,” and Miranda Lambert’s “Kerosene.”
  • We’re sticking with the 90s for this episode of Cutting Deep but delving into pop and hip hop. Episode six uses songs from some of the biggest albums of the time like Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous,” TLC’s “Crazysexycool,” Mariah Carey’s “Daydream,” and more.
  • Yet another episode of Cutting Deep that highlights music from the 1990s. This time the genre is a mix of punk rock, alternative rock, and grunge. We’ll hear songs from albums that opened the decade, like The Black Crowes’ “Shake Your Money Maker” and Green Day’s “Kerplunk,” and from albums that came at the end of the decade, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Californication.”
  • Episode five of Cutting Deep is all about 80s and 90s alternative rock and some of its subgenres like post-punk and shoegaze. It’s a very European episode, featuring songs from the Irish band The Cranberries, the English bands Bauhaus and Oasis, and more.
  • We’re returning to 60s R&B and soul, a genre we haven’t listened to since episode four of Cutting Deep. With a few songs from the 70s as well, we’ll hear from albums like “Aretha Now” by Aretha Franklin, “ABC” by The Jackson 5, and “Love Man” by Otis Redding.
  • Why does an artist release one song as a single over another? Do people listen to non-singles more now that streaming has made them more accessible? Those questions and more are discussed on this episode of Cutting Deep with guest Robin Hilton of NPR Music.
