ProMusica Joplin kicks off busy month of performances this week

PUBLIQuartet
ProMusica's Emlyn Johnson

Later this week, ProMusica Joplin will host its second performance of its 2022 - 2023 schedule. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The classical and choral-oriented non-profit is a month away from hosting its first performance at its new home, the Cornell Complex.

This Thursday at First Presbyterian Church at 509 Pearl Ave in Joplin ProMusica welcomes Grammy-nominated, New York-based PUBLIQuartetat 7 pm. Emlyn Johnson, Executive Director of ProMusica, says that if you enjoy classical music reinterpreted, then you'll love PUBLIQuartet.

"So what's really cool about PUBLIQuartet is again their finding this balance between a traditional classical repertoire and their own reinterpretation of classical music. They do a lot of improvisation; they have a lot of elements of jazz, soul, and funk in their music as well."

On November 4, just days before the first concert at the Cornell Complex, ProMusic Joplin will host their only ticketed event this season and welcome the ViennaBoys Choir at Central Christian Church in Joplin. PUBLIQuartet's concert this Thursday is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted. For more information, visit ProMusica.org.For 89 9 KRPS, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
