On Wednesday, the FDA amended the emergency use authorizations of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccines to allow boosters to be given to children as young as five. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
The Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine is now authorized for children two months after primary or booster vaccination who are at least six years old.
While the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is approved for kids at least two months following their primary or booster vaccination in children as young as five. These updated COVID-19 vaccines include an mRNA component of the original strain to provide an immune response broadly protective against COVID-19.
And an mRNA component common between the omicron variant BA.4 and BA.5 lineages to offer better protection against COVID-19 caused by the omicron variant.
The mRNA in these vaccines is a specific piece of genetic material that instructs cells in the body to make the distinctive “spike” protein of the original virus strain, and the omicron variant lineages BA.4 and BA.5.
