Later this week, just days before Halloween, Kansas historians will hold a panel discussion regarding murders in southeast Kansas that are believed to have occurred 150 years ago.

The annual memorial lecture is sponsored by the Friends of the Leonard H. Axe Library to honor the memory of Gene DeGruson, a Southeast Kansas scholar, writer, editor, and pioneering archivist and curator of Special Collections at Axe Library, who passed away in 1997.

Kansas historians will gather this week to host "The Bender Family Crimes: 150 Years Later". Steve Cox, the current curator of the Special Collections & University Archives at Pitt State, says it's difficult to discern fact from friction when speaking about the Bender family.

"You look back at the original newspaper articles after the discovery, and this was national news. Some say they came here from St. Louis. Some said some Chicago. Some say from Michigan. So right from the beginning, there's just a lot of inconsistencies and questions."

The Bender Family Crimes: 150 Years Later panel is open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Axe library at Pittsburg State this Thursday.

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
