While driving down an East Texas country road I spotted this scene. The autumn trees and the late afternoon sun made these golden bales of hay shine just a little bit more. Fortunately I had my camera with me. (c) James Q. Eddy Jr.

May 4th, Remember the Force of Password Day

Passwords can be a hassle, and it’s easy to go for the quickest and easiest solution, often meaning you put off regularly changing them.

Cyber security experts recommend you change them every three months and use a password management program.

Later this week, millions of Star Wars fans will celebrate May 4th, although you should also remember it is World Password Day. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro tells us more.

World Password Day is the annual reminder of the importance of strong passwords. Much of our financial, social, and recreational lives now depend on online transactions — which means passwords galore.

The Better Business Bureau reminds us that a few simple keystrokes are all that stand between your most personal information and the untold number of crooks who work to gain entrance into your many accounts.

According to the University of California System Wide Information Security Department, there are seven tips to live by regarding passwords.

First, never reveal your passwords to others.

Also, use different passwords for different accounts.

Third, Consider using multi-factor authentication.

And remember that lengthy passwords trump complex ones.

Likewise, make sure passwords that are hard to guess but easy to remember.

And yes, complexity still counts.
Finally, consider using a password manager like LastPass.com or keepass.info.

According to a recent Inc. Magazine article, experts estimate that 100 passwords get stolen every 1 second, around 8 million per day.
