KRPS is currently airing live streams from NPR, The World and the BBC World Service

Updated Friday May 30, 2025

Hello KRPS folks, Fred here

I'm sorry but streaming will be offline for the weekend.

Nearly two weeks ago one of the two systems that holds are local files and controls our automation crashed. That system was unrecoverable, however, we were able to get our files off of it thanks to Pittsburg State IT.

We've worked with Enco, our automation company this week to update the working system and got some functionality back and lost other parts, like online streaming.

While we now are running on Enco's latest software released in 2024 it wasn't designed to function with our hardware that was purchased in 2014.

Another peg of the story, in about a month the station will relocate to our new studios at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts where we will have brand new equipment. Seems like ages now, but in some ways right around the corner.

The work will continue on Monday to remedy the situation at our current home at Pittsburg State. I appreciate your patience.

Hello, Fred here with a programming update

Pittsburg State IT services and KRPS worked daily last week to try and resolve our automation failure. One of the two computers that we used for automation since 2011 died last Sunday afternoon 5/18. We determined that it cannot be restored.

We’ve updated the memory in the working computer, in addition to other upgrades in hopes that we can restore our previous automation system and files. Last week we transferred 68k audio cuts to our working computer.

This weekend I’ve been working with our engineer Art to continue attempting to restore our files and playlists.

Ironically in six weeks, KRPS was planning to replace our automation system. We will still replace it however it will just take more work to get there.

I’ve updated our online schedule to reflect what KRPS is airing in real time. Sorry for the downtime to our regular broadcast schedule. We are working to resume it as quickly as possible.

For the time being KRPS will air a mix of Morning Edition (weekday 4 to 9 am) followed by 1A (weekdays from 9 to 11 am) BBCWS (weekdays from 11 am to 3 pm) All Things Considered (weekdays from 4 to 7 pm) and the BBCWS (from 7 pm to 4 am the following day)

Happy Tuesday, Fred here with a station update

Sunday afternoon the system that controls our automation and audio files crashed and as a result we cannot toggle between the different audio streams that were broadcast.

Also, we cannot air local news spots or features.

This morning, we determined that we needed to replace the hard drive in the system that crashed and start from scratch. Resolving this issue completely will take a few more days.

Unfortunately, there are no warning signs when equipment failures like this will occur, it just happens and we need to act.

I'm sorry for the programming disruptions and I assure that we doing everything we can to fix this in a timely manner.

Thank you

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
