Fred's Southeast Kansas events -

Keenagers chorus Christmas Memories Concert at Riverton High School Auditorium with Labette Community Orchestra. Both are directed by Scott Nelson. Singers and musicians performing are from Girard and Pittsburg in Kansas and southwest Missouri. Free admission. Sunday December 7 starting at 3 pm.

Join Pittsburg State’s College of Arts and Sciences for a tour of the night sky followed by our feature presentation Messengers of Time and Space! This immersive experience invites the audience to explore the dynamic cosmos, witnessing the transformative impact of real-time data on our understanding of the Universe. Seating is limited, register to reserve yours today! Two shows: Saturday December 6 from 1 - 2 pm and 2:30 - 3:30 pm.

Topic - Pondering the Pond as Wildlife Habitat -

Special guest speaker - Linda Bower, videographer & Missouri Master Naturalist, spent seven years filming wildlife in and around a pond on digital microscopes, trail cams and camcorders. She identified over 100 species from tardigrades to bobcats. Bower’s amazing footage provides evidence that ponds are essential to supporting wildlife. We will also discuss how to create a great wildlife pond.

Fred's Southwest Missouri events - 

The Ozark Festival Orchestra will continue its 46th season of concerts in Monett at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, at the Monett High School Performing Arts Center with a celebration of Christmas. Under the baton of music director Carla Wootton, the OFO will play holiday favorites and have soloists present excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah.”

Tis the season for Missouri Southern State's annual A Seasonal Choral Flourish! Join us for timeless Christmas carols that narrate the characters of the Christmas story. 'Come and behold' the MSSU Choirs and guest musicians begin your holiday season and, maybe even join in the singing yourself! Saturday, December 6 7:30 PM

Historic Murphysburg Preservation, Inc. will host an afternoon tea on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 12 Noon and again at 3:00 p.m. Guests will be treated to a tour and historical account of the house while enjoying the holiday decorations. Period costumes (early 1900s) are welcome but are not required.

Raegan's Southwest Missouri events -

The Joplin Public Library’s adult Winter Reading Challenge started this week and goes through January. Participants who complete the challenge will receive a ceramic mug and tickets to enter a raffle. More details can be found on the library’s website.

December 5th and 6th, the Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin is hosting a Holiday Makers Market. Shop handcrafted gifts from local artists from 5 to 8 p.m. on the 5th and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 6th.

And December 13th is the Christmas Open House at the Joplin History and Mineral Museum. The event will go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature local craft and food vendors. Winners for several contests will also be announced.

Raegan's Southeast Kansas events -

December 5th and 6th, see Theatre Unplugged performed by Pitt State Theatre at Grubbs Hall. The performance starts at 7 p.m. both nights and features student-directed one act plays. Admission is free.

Also December 6th, the Pittsburg Noon Kiwanis Club is hosting its 75th annual Pancake Breakfast. It will be from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium. The event will also include entertainment and arts and crafts.

And December 12th, see The Nutcracker performed by International Ballet Stars at Memorial Auditorium. That starts at 7 p.m. and tickets can be bought beforehand on the Memorial Auditorium’s website.

Raegan Neufeld is a host and reporter for KRPS. Her love for learning and connecting with interesting people led her to a career in journalism, where she aims to tell impactful stories. Originally from south central Kansas, Raegan attended Fort Hays State University and graduated in December 2024.
Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
