Fred's southeast Kansas events

Spring is almost here and it’s the perfect time to attend Seed Starting Tips and Tricks hosted by K-State Horticulture Extension this Saturday March 14 at 10. It’s taking place at In The Garden Landscaping & Garden Center in Pittsburg. A Seed Starting Tips and Tricks class in Pittsburg this Saturday.

Also, 

Pittsburg State University is hosting it's 2nd AI Symposium, "AI for a Changing Society: Innovation and Responsibility," on Thursday, March 26th from 2 pm to 5 pm. The event will take place in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. The event is open to the public.

Finally,

Chair Fit for Active Aging is taking place in Altamont Wednesday, March 11, Monday March 16 and Wednesday March 18 from starting at 6:00 pm at Altamont Methodist Church. The program for active seniors uses sturdy chairs to provide safe, seated, or supported exercise. There is no cost for these classes.

The JoMo area storytellers are hosting a Story Slam March 15 this Saturday starting at 2 pm. The theme is Spring Surprises. Come to listen or tell a tale. Celebrate the beauty of floral design at the 11th annual Spiva in Bloom! This vibrant festival showcases stunning, locally crafted floral sculptures inspired by works from the PhotoSpiva 2026 national photography competition. Spiva in Bloom 2026 March 26 starting at 5:30 pm.

The Joplin Interfaith Coalition will hold its annual bake sale on Saturday, March 28 at the Islamic Society of Joplin. This year, they are working with Solace House, which provides end-of-life care at no charge to patients. Proceeds from the sale will help fund additional beds at their facilities. Raegan's southeast Kansas events

The Chanute Public Library is holding its third annual Puzzle Tournament on March 14th for individuals and teams. It’s free and open to participants of all ages. That will start at 1 p.m. at the Central Park Pavillion. Call the library to register.

Also March 14th, In The Garden in Pittsburg is hosting a class with K-State Horticultural Extension Agent Kenny Dodson. Receive seed starting tips and tricks beginning at 10 a.m.

And March 21st, celebrate Pittsburg’s 150th anniversary and America’s 250th anniversary with A Night in Philadelphia hosted by the Miners Hall Museum. The event will feature dinner, dancing and more at Memorial Auditorium, starting at 6 p.m. Tickets must be bought beforehand.

Raegan's southwest Missouri events

March 14th, see a performance by the Irish traditional ensemble Téada at the Cornell Complex in Joplin. The group blends lively jigs and ballads with a passion for Ireland’s musical heritage. That starts at 7 p.m.

March 19th is the first Third Thursday event of the year in Joplin. The theme is Go Green Downtown. Enjoy local artisans, music, entertainment and food from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

And the Joplin Public Library’s Teen Reading Challenge is going on this month. It’s open to grades 6-12 and goes until March 31st. Teens who complete the challenge will get a book and be entered in a raffle. More information can be found on the library’s website.

Raegan Neufeld is a host and reporter for KRPS. Her love for learning and connecting with interesting people led her to a career in journalism, where she aims to tell impactful stories. Originally from south central Kansas, Raegan attended Fort Hays State University and graduated in December 2024.
Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
