The deadline for the ten-page application is Monday, May 1. If approved, the city and private party who received the grant must be able to match at least 25% of the grant funds.

We'll get an update tomorrow night at the Pittsburg (KS) City Commission on a grant that could net the city $750,000 for a new, non-profit childcare and education center. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Typically applying for grants by city councils or commissions is a no-brainer. Just like applying for a job, you can apply, but that doesn't mean you'll get it.

Also, grants, perhaps now more than ever, are competitive due to state governments having billions of dollars in budget surplus.

By a 3-2 vote two weeks ago, the Pittsburg City Commission approved submitting an application to the Kansas Department of Commerce for the Small Cities Community Block Grant.

President of City Commission Stu Hite says that when he first ran for election in 2021, residents told him about the need for additional childcare in Pittsburg.

"One of the things we heard as candidates during different forums that year and continue to hear is the desperate need for additional childcare in our community.

There's a waiting list at current facilities, and it just seems to be a hindrance to frankly attracting new employees to come to Pittsburg.

According to recent Kansas Child Care Aware data, over 1,000 spots could be added today to meet current demand.
