Pittsburg City Commissioner speaks about a community block grant that could land the city $750,000 for a new non-profit education center

According to the non-profit Childcare Aware of Kansas, just over 1,000 childcare spots could be added today in Crawford County to meet demand.

Recently, the Pittsburg City Commission, by a 3 to 2 vote, approved city staff to continue work on a Kansas Department of Commerce application that could net Pittsburg 750,000 dollars to develop new non-profit childcare and education.

KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro spoke with Commissioner Stu Hite last week (04/21/2023) about expanding childcare in Pittsburg.

A concern that says Hite says he heard at forums when he ran for election in 2021 and that he still hears today from residents .

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
