Reaching Out To the Community, Pittsburg City Commission Considers New Advisory Council

The goal of the NAC would be to support neighbors, and better utilize city support for neighborhood improvement initiatives. Commissioners asked if the ordinance could include renters who live in the defined quadrants.

A new community advisory committee could be established in Pittsburg, (KS). KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Tuesday night at the bi-weekly meeting of the Pittsburg City Commission, members were consulted about a plan to create a Neighborhood Advisory Council.

The system would create a sub-committee to city commissioners and represent the neighborhoods of Pittsburg.

NAC members would be appointed by the City Commissioners under the proposed plan.

The goals of the plan are simple, to create more neighborhood engagement, supporting cleanup efforts in Pittsburg and educate neighbors regarding code enforcement.

The proposed new advisory council is focused on homeowners, with that in mind City Commission member Chuck Munsell raised a concern Tuesday about how renters would become involved.

“They people who came to the meetings, are renters. And I talked to them the other day about this committee, they might be interested in it. But I feel like, we have to give the renters, like them, an opportunity because they live there. They’ve lived in that neighborhood for 20-years.”

The city commission took no action on the new Neighborhood Advisory Council and agreed to table it until the next meeting on Tuesday July 11 to allow time to work out the details.
