Pittsburg City Commission Approves Funding for New Fire Engine

City of Pittsburg

After receiving ten bids for the financing of the new engine, Pittsburg selected Labette Bank to provide the financing at an interest rate of 4.85%.

Pittsburg, is getting a new fire engine, replacing a truck that is over 30-years old.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Thanks to the reauthorization by Pittsburg voters in April of the ½ cent Public Safety Sales Tax the community is purchasing a new truck valued at over $945,000.

Pittsburg City CommissionersTuesday approved waiving the City's formal bid process to allow the purchase of a Pierce Fire Apparatus from sole source supplier Conrad Fire Equipment, of Olathe, Kansas. Pittsburg Fire Chief Taylor Cerne spoke about the purchase at Tuesday night's commission meeting.

“Basically what we're coming to you with is to purchase this fire truck that was built and is ready for delivery at this point in time. End of this month, first part of August. Otherwise we would be looking at a minimum of a three year wait.”

With the purchase of the new fire truck, the city would be able to retire models manufactured in 1986 or 1990 depending on the availability of parts and their cost to keep them operational.

Last year, with the help of Public Safety Sales Tax, Pittsburg raised 2.3 million dollars to supplement the city’s budget.

Since 2013, over 19.2 million has been raised due to the ½ cent tax.
