Freeman Health System headquartered in Joplin made a major announcement in southeast Kansas Wednesday.
KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
On what she referred to as a “monumental day,” Freeman Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Paula Baker announced plans for the region’s largest provider of healthcare services to construct a state-of-the-art, full-service hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.
During a press conference held Wednesday morning, a rendition of the new hospital – which will offer 50 beds and span 170,000 square feet – was unveiled.
Upon completion, the hospital will create between 500 and 1,000 new jobs in Southeast Kansas. Freeman already possesses a sizable footprint in Pittsburg, thanks to several primary care clinics, an outpatient surgery center and a comprehensive medical oncology program.
Additionally, earlier this month, Freeman continued its partnership as the exclusive provider of sports medicine for Pittsburg State University athletics.
Freeman officials are now working with an architectural team to finalize building plans and to identify an optimal location in Pittsburg to begin construction.
