Argument Between Neighbors Results in Death

This weekend's murder in Frontenac is so rare that according to the Kansas Crime Index compiled by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation annually dating back to 2014, the city has not reported one homicide.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Frontenac Police Department are investigating the death of a man from Frontenac, Kansas this weekend.

Last Friday at around 8:20 p.m., the Frontenac Police Department received a 911 call reporting shots fired. Police officers located the victim, 39 year old Jonathan D. Brewer of Frontenac, unconscious at a neighbor’s residence at 803 N Cayuga.

EMS arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead. The preliminary investigation indicates Brewer and a neighbor, identified as 19-year-old Michael C. Simpson of Frontenac, were involved in a dispute.

Simpson is suspected of shooting Brewer during the altercation. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and booked into the Crawford County Jail. Formal charges are pending.

The investigation is ongoing. Violent crime in Frontenac with a population of about 3,400 is extremely rare.

According to the 2023 Kansas Crime Index, there was one rape, zero robberies, two aggravated assaults, and no homicides in the community last year.
