Pittsburg State football seeks undefeated season this weekend

This weekend, Pittsburg State football will seek to go undefeated this season after taking down Washburn on Saturday. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

With Saturday’s 37 to 23 win over Washburn, the Gorillas clinched at least a piece of their first MIAA title since 2014.

With a victory this upcoming Saturday against Fort Hays, the Gorillas will earn their first outright conference title since 2011, the same year they won their last NCAA Division II football title with a victory over Wayne State University.

PSU Head Football Coach Brian Wright appearing on ESPN Radio 100.7 FM Monday night, spoke about the season.

“It’s been a lot of work by a lot of people. We have a great staff here. We have great players. Great kids who have been committed to what we’ve tried to do. The culture we’ve tried to build, the attitude that we’ve built.”

The latest NCAA Division 2 rankings were released yesterday; Pitt State football is ranked third in Super Region Three behind Grand Valley and Ferris State.

This Saturday, the Gorillas host the Fort Hays State Tigers. Kick-off at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg at 2 pm. For 89 9 KRPS, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.
