Joplin Sports Authority provides quarterly update tonight at city council meeting

Several events, from golf to baseball and cross country, are coming to Joplin this year, organized by the Joplin Sports Authority, bringing tens of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

The Joplin Sports Authority will provide its quarterly update. The non-profit, funded mainly by the city's lodging tax, works to attract and promote sporting events to the area. KPRS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The board, headed by former Missouri Southern State University Athletic Director Jerrod Bruggman, includes the person who replaced Bruggman as AD at MSSU, Rob Mallory.

The committee also includes the head of Joplin's Visitors and Tourism Bureau, Patrick Tuttle, and city council member Chuck Copple.

According to the Joplin Sports Authority Quarterly update, you can find a link to the report at our website, KRPS.org; revenue for the JSA has increased by about $40,000 compared to last year's first quarter.

Also, the Sports Authority has booked 42 at least events, including the Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association winter, spring, and fall state championships, the MIAA Conference Women's Golf Championships, and the National Junior College Athletic Association baseball championship.

The JSA estimates the 42 confirmed events will bring at least 12,000 participants to the Joplin area, not including coaches, officials, support staff, parents, and fans.

The informal portion of the Joplin city council meeting gets underway tonight at 5:15. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro.
