The George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Mo., was the first dedicated to a nonpresident.

Carver spent the first 12 years of his life on the grounds where the Carver National Monument stands today.

The George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond will host two events this weekend. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro tells us more.

The Carver Monument will host Earth Day events and Art In The Park on Saturday. George Washington Carver is best known as an agricultural scientist, including his work with peanuts, but he was also an avid painter. According to Curtis Gregory of the National Park Service, there will be numerous activities for kids and adults.

"We have a tent, called the budding artists' tent, that's our Junior Ranger tent where there is going to be lots of activities for Junior Rangers where they can press flowers, paint rocks.

We'll have the Spiva Art Gallery Art Center will be there, as well, and they're going to be doing some activities."

The monument will also have a special exhibit of George Washington Carver's paintings, titled Expressions of the Soul. The Earth Day and Art In The Park festivities get this Saturday underway at 10 am.

The event is free and open to the public. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro
