As the football season draws to a close, a new MLB season is on the horizon

We’re six weeks away from the opening of spring training for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals caravan stops at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin this Saturday. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The free event begins at 11:00 a.m.in the Connor Ballroom and includes a question and answer session with right fielder Lars Nootbar, pitchers Zack Thompson and Gordon Graceffo, and retired pitchers Randy Flores and Alan Benes, who round out the panel.

Cardinals Caravan emcee Tom Ackerman will also conduct a question and answer session. Players will give autographs to the first 400 kids ages 15 years and under. Line tickets will be available at the front entrance of Billingsly Student Center on the morning of the event.

Doors will open at 10:00 a.m. Guests will also receive a free gift from Cardinals Caravan sponsor Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance.

The Cards open their 2023 spring training schedule in Jupiter, Florida, on February 25 and conclude on March 26, playing 29 exhibition games over 30 days. St. Louis opens the regular season at home against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 30. For 89 9 KRPS News, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
