Communications Study suggests Joplin city staff is overwhelmed, must streamline messaging

Earlier this week, the Joplin City Council received the results of a communication study by a Kansas City, Missouri-based advertising firm that cited the need for numerous areas of improvement. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Global Prairie created the Marketing and Communications Roadmap. The 50-page document lays out what makes Joplin special, the findings of City Manager Nick Edwards's 2021 Listening Tour, and how to further develop trust and create a positive image of Joplin.

The four key results of the study conclude that the city spreads its communication resources too thin in critical areas. Also, Joplin must create an opportunity to tell a proactive and positive narrative regarding the city. Furthermore, communication gaps have made Joplin residents feel disconnected, uninformed, and distrustful.

The study recommends establishing a one-year plan that reinvests in creating a positive narrative about Joplin through the city's website, Facebook posts, and email newsletters.

One example in the report was that only three of the city's 18 parks posted updates to their Facebook page last year. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
