We're about two months away from the start of Spring. This March, the city of Joplin will kick off its Sesquicentennial celebration. We got an update from the Joplin Celebration Commission Tuesday night. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
Joplin is rich with history, and throughout this Spring and summer, city organizers and historians will be busy putting together a celebration that will showcase much of it.
From a 150th birthday celebration on the actual birth of the city on March 23, which includes a Sesquicentennial quilt presentation, to a series of eight films shown on Thursday nights at city parks that either take place in Joplin or have some kind of other tie to the community.
Patrick Tuttle, Director of Joplin's Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke about the 17 scheduled events Tuesday at the Joplin city council meeting.
"We're hoping to have some cemetery tours and the Cox family farmhouse open. The state preservation conference will be here, so we're trying to work around that and have a lot of history classes and lectures that connect with that. As well as well continue to working on our heritage trails."
