A new 33 million dollar movie theater coming to Joplin

The Joplin region has no fewer than five movie theaters currently.

Tonight, members of the Joplin city council will get an update on the Woodsonia Project being constructed on the southeast part of town near Interstate-44. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The project is anchored by constructing a 213,000-square-foot Menards home improvement warehouse in addition to 180 new multi-family home units, according to the agenda for tonight's meeting available at JoplinMo.org.

Tonight, developers will also pitch the idea of adding an eight entertainment project to include an eight-screen movie theater, bar, restaurant, arcade, and family entertainment center.

The theater portion of the Entertainment Project will have all the amenities of a new theater, including reclining seats, large format screens, and the MX4D experience.

The estimate to build the new entertainment center is 33.6 million dollars. If approved by the city council, the City of Joplin will provide 1.3 million dollars in city funds to assist in paying for Public Parking Improvements and green space.

In addition, the City will establish a community improvement district and assess a one percent sales tax on all taxable sales generated within the entertainment center. The revenue generated by this additional 1% sales tax will be used exclusively for reimbursement to the City for its $1,300,000 contribution.

The formal portion of the Joplin city council meeting gets underway tonight at 6. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro
