Today, we remember the first anniversary of the death of Afghani teenager Rezwan Kohistani in Webb City. A southwest Missouri resettlement agency continues to work to improve the lives of existing and future refugees. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
Kohistani, who along with seven family members had relocated from Afghanistan in the fall of 2021, on the heels of the chaotic pullout of American forces after a 20-year war with the Taliban.
Refugee and Immigrant Services & Education, or R.A.I.S.E headquartered in the tiny southwest Missouri community of Noel, has worked firsthand to assist in relocating refugees from Afghanistan and Africa.
Recently, the non-profit held a fundraiser and raised over $15,000 to purchase a driving simulator so refugees, who commonly don’t have access to vehicles, can practice their driving and earn a license.
It was also Ann Wolf’s Master of Social Work senior project.
The Pittsburg State student spoke about it Thursday.
"A lot cheaper than buying a car, and the volunteer hours, or even just asking a volunteer, would you loan your car to someone? No, they’re not going to do that, typically.
And the childcare that’s needed it's cheaper. It’s more effective. It’s a better solution for everyone."
Currently, RAISE is helping about 100 refugees in Joplin.
