Back To School Season is Here and You Can Save Money This Weekend

This year 17 states offer back-to-school tax-free holidays, that’s down from 19 states in 2022. Kansas remains the only one of the Four States who doesn’t offer a tax free time to purchase back-to-school products. Arkansas takes place Aug. 5-6. Oklahoma mirrors Missouri’s Aug. 4-6.

There are about seven weeks of summer remaining, but the season is winding down for many teachers, students, and administrators in the area.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

It’s a unique time of year. It will likely still feel like summer on Monday, August 22, but it will also be the first day of the 2023-2024 school year for Joplin Schools.

To help mark the beginning of back-to-school season Missouri Treasure Vivek Malek will visit Missouri Southern’s Ralph L. Gray Alumni Center in Joplin this afternoon.

By Missouri state law, the sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday.

Certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items as defined by the statute, are exempt from sales tax for this period.

You do not need to be a Missouri resident to take advantage of the Tax Sales holiday.

Malek will also be speaking about Missouri’s Education Savings Accounts, known as MOST 529. As of the end of June, there are more than 190,000 beneficiary accounts with assets totaling $3.9 billion available for future education needs.

He was appointed treasurer by Gov. Mike Parson in January as Scott Fitzpatrick was sworn in as State Auditor. He’s facing a challenge from State Representative, Cody Smith of Carthage in next year’s Republican primary.

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
