PSU sports hires local Sports Director

Pittsburg State University announced a new hire Monday. A member of the media well known to news watchers in the Four States. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

In a web post atPittStateGorillas.com, PSU Athletics Director Jim Johnson announced the hire of current KOAM-TV Sports Director Jacob Lenard to the role of Pitt State's Associate Athletic Director for Fan Engagement.

Lenard has held the position of Sports Director at KOAM for seven years. A 2012 grad of Pittsburg State with a bachelor of science degree in communication, Lenard joined KOAM first as a multimedia news journalist in 2013.

He became a sports reporter for the station in 2014 before being promoted to Sports Director in June 2015. The Yates Center, Kansas native will coordinate and manage all aspects of overall athletics program promotion and outreach through digital media, broadcasting, and other components of the game day experience for fans.

Lenard also will serve as oversight administrator for the MIAA Digital Network. He starts in his new position this June. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. He’s also a daily reporter for the station, covering city government, elections, public safety, arts, entertainment, culture, sports and more. Fred has also spearheaded and overseen a sea change in programming for KRPS from a legacy classical station to one that airs a balance of classical, news, jazz, and cultural programming that better reflects the diverse audience of the Four States. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
