The Pittsburg State University women’s team posted an 85-82 win over Southwest Minnesota State University in the Central Regional Tournament championship. They’re now one of eight teams remaining in Division II and will play in the Elite Eight in Pittsburgh, PA, starting on March 24.

The Gorillas had to come from behind to get the win, trailing Minnesota State University-Mankato by 15 points at halftime. It took the entire third quarter and first few minutes of the fourth before PSU took the lead, and they had to battle until the last second to keep it.

Independence, KS native Jim Halsey has represented 29 County Music Hall of inductees and 10 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inductees.

Cast in Steel has 42 teams from 34 schools signed up for this year's competition, where teams will make cast steel African spearheads.

PSU is hosting April Young Bennett, author of the “Ask a Suffragist” Wednesday March 1 at 6:30 pm. The lecture is part of the Pitt State Women in Government Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. It is hosted by University Advancement and Pitt State Women and Gender Studies Program.

According to data from the Pittsburg Micropolitan Report published in May of 2022, unemployment in the area was stable at 3.6%, down from 5.5% in 2020. The highest unemployment rate for Pittsburg, KS, in 2021 was in the mining industry, which posted an unemployment rate of 11.2%.
