While driving down an East Texas country road I spotted this scene. The autumn trees and the late afternoon sun made these golden bales of hay shine just a little bit more. Fortunately I had my camera with me. (c) James Q. Eddy Jr.

Pittsburg State President Dan Shipp to Bike Across Kansas Starting Next Week

Shipp, nearing his first anniversary as Pitt State President, will raise funds for PSU scholarships in addition to meeting with alumni across the state on his 12-day tour.

800 miles over 12 days across the Kansas prairie to raise eight million dollars for Pittsburg State student scholarships.

That’s the hope for Pittsburg State President Dan Shipp as he embarks on the journey near the Colorado/Kansas border near Interstate-70 in northwest Kansas on Monday, May 15.

He is hoping to raise awareness of Pittsburg State and money for student scholarships by biking an average of 60 miles per day, over 12 days.

Shipp says he has already heard from Pittsburg State alum who want to help anyway they can.

“One really sweet woman from Joplin, said, well we don’t have a lot of money, but we’d be willing to sponsor you a dollar a mile, which is about 900 dollars, it’s going to be about 900 miles when we’re all done.

And I’m like that is a lot of money, are you kidding me? You know, so, it could be 50 cents, it could be 900 dollars.”

While Kansas is known for being flat, it is also one of the windiest states in the US, averaging 11 miles per hour.

Shipp is scheduled to make 15 stops, including in Garden and Dodge Cities, Wichita, and Topeka, up to Lawrence and down to Fort Scott.
