The 12-day, 800+ mile bike trek across Kansas started Monday morning for Pittsburg State President Dan Shipp. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
About 50 people, many of them wearing Pitt State colored crimson and gold t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase ‘Dan Bikes Kansas’ across the front turned out to see President Shipp, Facilities Manager for the Kansas Polymer Research Center at PSU Darrell Pulliam and the Executive Director of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce Blake Benson leave Champion Plaza next to Carnie Smith Stadium just after 9 am Monday.
Benson, also a member of the Kansas Board of Regents shared his thoughts just prior to leaving for Fort Scott.
“A little nervous. It's been a while since I’ve been on a bike but it’s a great cause and obviously it shows the commitment that President Shipp has to making it as easy as possible for anyone that wants to attend Pittsburg State university to do. That's obviously something that we as the Board of Regents support 100%.”
Day one included heading north to Fort Scott before turning west to Iola, then traveling to Lawrence on day two and Topeka on day three to attend the Kansas Board of Regents meeting on Wednesday.
Shipp’s goal is raising at least eight million dollars for unrestricted student scholarships at Pittsburg State by donors making one-time donations or pledging per mile.
He’s expected to reach the Kansas/Colorado border next Friday May 26th. So far Dan has biked 77 miles, and raised $234,910 dollars. For 89 9 KRPS News, I’m Fred Fletcher-Fierro
