Reading Summer Camp Enrollment Has Begun at PSU

The number of people who say they read on a daily basis continues to decline. According to a 2023 study, 28% of children between the ages of 8 and 18 say they read daily. Overall, there has been a 26% decline in reading since 2005 in that age bracket.

We’re just a few weeks away from the start of Spring, however, enrollment for summer camps has already begun.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Children who need help overcoming reading challenges can get help at the Center for Reading at Pittsburg State University in Secret Codes Camp, a summer literacy program.

Reading difficulties are common, and students who don’t get help are more likely to drop out of high school and experience a negative self-image. Specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia often are associated with lower academic achievement, lower income, higher rates of suicidality, and higher rates of unemployment.

According to Thomas Hurford of PSU’s Center for Reading the Secret Code Camp curriculum has been successful for numerous age levels.

“If there’s a struggling reader whether it’s Kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and so on we want to be able to help out.

Make sure that they are able to read because they always say in a school setting kindergarten, first grade, and second grade you're learning to read.

Third grade and up your reading to learn.”

Registration for the camp is now open and closes May 20.

Planned for June and July, it will consist of one 50-minute small group session per day Monday through Thursday for eight weeks, totaling 32 sessions from June 3 to July 25.

Students also may opt to attend online.
