The Lady Gorillas jumped out to a 15 to 7 first-quarter lead and never trailed. Macie Mays led the team with 17 points, while Grace Pyle had 15 and Karenna Gerber added 10. Pittsburg State women’s basketball drew 22 foul shots, making 19. In comparison, Fort Hays had only 14 shots from the charity stripe, making 11.

For the first time in program history, Pittsburg State women’s basketball won the MIAA Conference Tournament on Sunday in Kansas City.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The Lady Gorillas knew they would have their hands full on Friday taking on Missouri Southern, however, Pitt State women’s basketball defeated the Lions 73-65.

The following day, the Gorillas would have to defeat a team in Missouri Western who was riding a 15-game winning streak and also defeated PSU at home the weekend prior.

Regardless, the Gorillas defeated the MIAA regular season champs Saturday by 20, 75-55, and would take on Fort Hays State who defeated PSU both times the teams played in the regular season.

Pitt State play-by-play announcer Eddie Lomsheck with the call yesterday as the Gorillas won the MIAA tournament.

“Two, one, count it down, it’s over, Pitt State women for the first time in program history are the MIAA tournament champions! They came here this week having not won in this building in six years.”

It was also the first time that Pitt State women’s and men’s basketball appeared in the MIAA tournament championship games in the same season.

PSU women’s basketball earned a four seed in the Central Regional and will now take on the number 5 seed, Harding University in the first round of the Division 2 Regionals in Oklahoma.

The game is scheduled for this Friday at 7:30 pm.
