Pittsburg State Crushes Competition at National Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Pittsburg State University

Pitt State has reached the top of the podium in each of the last five championship meets (2022 outdoor, 2023 indoor/outdoor, 2024 indoor/outdoor).

This weekend, for the first time in 16 years, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams from the same Division II university won both National Championships.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

The Pitt State men's outdoor track & field team scored points in 10 different disciplines and captured four individual event national titles to hold off all would-be challengers and claim the program's third consecutive NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship on Saturday.

While PSU Women’s outdoor track and field team claimed the program's second all-time national championship, the first team crown since the Gorillas won the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship.

PSU men’s outdoor track and field has now captured six national championships, winning indoor titles in 2018, 2023 & 2024 as well as three straight outdoor titles in 2022, 2023 & 2024. Pitt State Outdoor women’s track and field hit the century mark with 100 points in the three-day championship meet held at Francis G. Welch Stadium at Emporia State.

The scoring outburst spread across 12 different disciplines, leaving no room for a serious challenge. Adams State University finished as the national runner-up with a distant 72 points.

The Gorillas became the first program to claim men's and women's outdoor titles in the same season since Abilene Christian University in 2008.
