The MIAA football season kicks off in just five weeks. The conference held its media day on Tuesday.
KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.
Expectations are high for first-year Pitt State head coach Tom Anthony this upcoming season. The Gorillas were 11 and 2 last year under Brian Wright who left PSU to become the new head coach of Northern Arizona University.
Last season the Gorillas took another step towards bringing a national championship back to southeast Kansas by defeating Indianapolis in the first round of the playoffs 35-17, however losing in the second to Grand Valley State 20-17. Tom Anthony knows first-hand about the high expectations at Pitt State, and he spoke about them on Tuesday.
“We did things here at such a high level for the last three to four years and that’s a testament to Coach Wright and to our staff when we were here starting in December of 2019. There’s obviously so many things that I was a part of implementing so now being able to my footprint on a couple of things and our staff’s footprint on a couple of things.”
New in the 2024 season — “Week Zero”. At the 2024 NCAA Convention, the Division II football membership approved a proposal to add Week Zero to Division II football.
The approval allows schools to schedule contests one week earlier than the Division’s previous start date and extends the regular season from 11 weeks to 12. To kick off the season Pitt State hosts Ferris State Saturday, August 31.
