Tuesday, November 5 was a big day for KRPS as the station, after 16 years said goodbye to its Broadcast Electronic FM35-T. The roughly 1,700-pound transmitter was sold to a broadcasting company with stations in Ohio and West Virginia.
Last fall KRPS was awarded a grant through the American Rescue Plan Act that allowed the station to purchase and install a brand-new transmitter.
The new Nautel brand transmitter is 20% more efficient, in addition to allowing KRPS to broadcast HD channels including a 24/7 BBC World Service station.
Also, in hopes of avoiding long periods of being off the air, the Nautel can be monitored remotely during storms when it’s difficult to get out to the transmitter site.
Due to the transmitter change, KRPS is operating at a lower power than our usual 100,000 watts. The new transmitter will be installed in the coming days.
Update - The new Nautel transmitter is scheduled to be delivered and installed on Tuesday November 12.
