Residents in Lamar, Missouri, have approved a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the total reconstruction of the city's aquatic center. It was a close vote. Lamar has a total population of about 4,300 residents according to the most recent US census; however, just 668 voters cast their ballots to determine the future of the city's aquatic center.
The measure passed with 340 votes, a mere 12 votes more than the 328 against. The measure was the only ballot question for residents living in the city limits.
With the approval, Lamar will fund a 30-year ½ cent sales tax increase to the construction of a new aquatic center after the city's current facility has remained closed for more than two years.
The sales tax increase is estimated to generate $4.4 million for removing the existing pool and building a new facility. The tax would cost residents about $5 for every $1,000 spent within city limits.
