Joplin Police to hold memorial services remembering officers

Over 2,000 mourners attended Officer Cooper's and Reed's services at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin last March.

Joplin Police will hold two memorials next week, marking the day three JPD officers were shot; two later died. KRPS's Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Tuesday, March 8, 2022, will be remembered in Joplin's history. It was when two Joplin Police Officers were shot pursuing a suspect near the Northpark Mall.

40-year-old Benjamin Cooper died later that day at an area hospital. 27-year-old Jake Reed passed away on Friday, March 11. 53-year Rick Hirshey was shot in the face but survived and is now a school resource officer for Joplin Schools.

Next Wednesday, at 10:00 am, the Joplin Police Department will hold a memorial service at the Public Safety Training Facility at 5102 Swede Lane, Webb City, Missouri 64870. During the service, JPD Chief of Police Sloan Rowland and others will speak to the sacrifices of that day and the heroic acts of our officers.

To remember Officer Reed, an additional service at Public Safety Training Facility in Webb City on Saturday, March 11. It will include a Joplin City Council proclamation for "Jake Reed Day." Both services are open to the public. For 89 9 KRPS News, I'm Fred Fletcher-Fierro
