Future Doctors and Dentists from KCU Joplin assist community organizations and meet future patients during annual community service day.

Last week, Kansas City University Joplin medical and dental school students marked the institution's 'We Care Day' by helping out community organizations. KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

Earlier this summer Joplin became the smallest community in the US to be home to both a dental and a medical school when KCU Joplin welcomed the first students to their dental school.

The institution opened its medical school in 2017. Service is one of Kansas City University’s core values and an important aspect of campus life.

On Friday, 78 student doctors immersed themselves in community service through 'We Care Day'.

On this annual day, students, faculty, and staff partner with more than a dozen local nonprofit organizations to give back by completing a variety of service projects.

Pittsburg State graduate and first-year KCU Joplin Dental school student, Aaron David took care in ‘We Care Day’ Friday.

He says with the opening of KCU Joplin’s Dental School it’s going to help underserved areas in the rural parts of the US.

“Being in southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas area, and particularly where I moved from, I moved from the Kansas City area, it's so in need of access for healthcare down here and having a dental school is going to be amazing for the community.”

KCU Joplin assisted the Water Gardens Outreach Center, Ronald McDonald House, and the city of Joplin another other non-profits.

Classes started Monday for the first-ever students of KCU Joplin’s Dental School.
