2023 MIAA Football Season Kicks Off Thursday

Pittsburg State

Second-year head coach Atiba Bradley is seeking to earn the Lion's first winning season since 2013 when MSSU went 7 and 3, finishing 6th in the MIAA. While PSU's Brian Wright has unfinished business from the 2022 season. The Gorillas suffered their only loss in the 2nd round of the NCAA playoffs to the eventual back to back D2 champ, Ferris State.

The MIAA conference kicks off its football season Thursday night with Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern in action.

KRPS’s Fred Fletcher-Fierro has more.

MSSU football ended the 2022 campaign on a sour note, losing five straight, after winning three of their first four games to earn an overall record of four and seven.

Regardless of how well Southern football plays or their record they are unable to go to the playoffs.

Late last year MSSU football wasbanned by the NCCA from postseason play after it determined the university did not monitor its football program under former head coach Jeff Simms during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

While the fourth-ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas are looking to repeat as MIAA champions and build on last season's twelve-and-one record.

Appearing on 100.7 FM ESPN Radio Monday Pittsburg State Head Coach Brian Wright spoke about preparing for Thursday night's game.

“It was really difficult the last couple of weeks here, just again with that heat. We’re very fortunate because we can go inside and we have the Plaster Center to practice. That’s good for our offense and defense, we really can’t get a lot of special teams work in there though.”

Tomorrow Pittsburg State hosts the Washburn Ichabods, while MSSU takes on the fifth-rankedNorthwest Missouri Bearcats.

Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Since 2017 Fred Fletcher-Fierro has driven up Highway 171 through thunderstorms, downpours, snow, and ice storms to host KRPS’s Morning Edition. For over two months in the fall of 2022 he worked remotely with NPR staff to relaunch krps.org to an NPR style news and information website.

In the fall of 2023 Fred was promoted to Interim General Manager and was appointed GM in Feburary of 2024.
